Day 35: DO NOT Get Healthy to Beat the Corona Virus
Way back in the dawning days of 2020 and the onset of the Corona virus, there were many predictions of just how short lived the interruption to our lives would be. 2 weeks. 2 weeks would be all we would need to flatten curve. Amazingly, flattening a curve is no longer even talked about. 60 days. 90 days. All we need is 90 days and we got this thing beat. We would tame the virus by frankly becoming uncivil, and uncivilized, by not going out, by not associating, and not being friendly or civil in community settings.
During these early days I was consumed by this bug and the talk, research, and steps we would take to beat it. On one of my thousands of hours devouring time on the web to get a sense of where, what, and why, I read an article that stopped me in my tracks as it spoke about something that no one else was talking about. It talked about how bad the viral toll would be in America, how exceptionally bad the viral toll would be in America. NOT because of how bad the virus was – but how bad our health was.
See, our health has made the virus more lethal.
Yes, I understand that there were people who were “healthy” that died of, or from virus. Yet another article that recently came out showed that of the 2.5million people worldwide who have died from the virus, 2.2 million were in countries where more than half the population is overweight. Here is the article link: https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/04/health/obesity-covid-death-rate-intl/index.html
2.2 million of the 2.5 million came from countries where more than half of the population was overweight. And of all the exports we have, of all the things we are leaders at worldwide – being unhealthy is where we rank at the top. The stats show that 70-75% of Americans are overweight.
Let me be clear – this is not a fat shaming podcast – it is a shine a bright light on a massive health crisis we have in America podcast. Our lifestyle made the bug more virulent. Our lifestyle! We can talk about the need for more shots, more access, more distribution all we want – but the 8000lb gorilla in the room, he USED to be 800lbs, is that if we truly want to beat THIS bug, and then the other bugs to come – we need to get healthier. It REALLY is that plain and simple.
What is astounding is that by getting healthier does not just affect our chances with THIS bug, but also it will dramatically decrease the obesity epidemic, the ramifications of type 2 diabetes, change the war on cancers, and actually see a health care system BECOME a caring for health system instead of a symptom treatment system – which we have indoctrinated for decades.
How amazing if in those early days of 2020 our health care officials would have instituted a 90 EXERCISE AND EAT RIGHT program and Operation Warp Speed would have been enacted to give everyone access to more gyms, more exercise, more healthy eating, rest, sleep, sunshine, and talking with our friends. Imagine where our country would be now.0
