LET'S TALK ABOUT CANCER

Recently a friend of mine was diagnosed with stomach cancer. That was bad news. Strike 1.

He was later diagnosed with lung cancer also. That was bad news. Strike 2

It was suggested since the meds he was on for the stomach cancer did not seem to work that he try to be in a clinical trial. For that, he had to have a CAT scan of his brain. Guess what was found: Strike 3.

PREVENTING FIRES

One of the things that we get misguided by in the LONGEVITY world is that we not only have to help you be healthier for more better years, but we also need to decrease your chances of dying from the Top Killers Of Americans. We all want the beautiful house that is lovely to live in. But have we made it fire proof, or at least able to handle a fire without having to be demolished?

KILLERS

For decades the top leading killers of Americans have been 1. Heart Disease, and, 2. Cancer.

It wasn't THAT long ago in 1971 that President Nixon waged a war against Cancer pledging to find a cure for Cancer with research. How did we do? Over 700,000 Americans a year. The US spends astonomical amounts of money in treating Cancer. We hardly talk about preventing Cancer. It is estimated that the United States spends almost $200 billion on the treatments of cancer, see link: MONEY

When researching 'how much money is spent on preventing cancer', the links fill up with 'early testing' or 'early diagnosing', which are both drastically different than preventing cancer. Early detection, although can be life saving, it is NOT prevention.

IT'S A LOT

Here is a list of some of the things that can cause cancer. How many of them do you engage in?

Cancer is a complex disease with multiple potential causes.

Some of the most common and well-established risk factors include:

Lifestyle Factors:

Smoking: Tobacco use is the leading cause of cancer, responsible for over 80% of lung cancers and many other types.

  • Lack of physical activity: Regular exercise helps protect against several types of cancer.
  • Sun exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer.
  • Environmental Exposures:
  • Air pollution: Inhaling polluted air can increase the risk of lung cancer.
  • Asbestos: Exposure to asbestos can cause lung and mesothelioma.
  • Radon: A radioactive gas found in some homes, radon can increase the risk of lung cancer.
  • Chemicals: Certain chemicals, such as benzene, formaldehyde, and pesticides, can be carcinogenic. Infections:
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV): HPV can cause cervical, anal, and other cancers.
  • Hepatitis B and C viruses: These viruses can cause liver cancer.
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): HIV weakens the immune system and increases the risk of certain cancers.
  • Genetics:
  • Inherited gene mutations: Some people inherit genes that increase their risk of developing certain cancers.
  • Family history of cancer: Having a close family member with cancer can increase your risk.
  • Other Factors:
  • Age: The risk of cancer generally increases with age.
  • Hormonal factors: Certain hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone, can increase the risk of certain cancers.
  • Dietary factors: Consuming processed meats, red meat, and sugary drinks may increase the risk of certain cancers.
  • Alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol intake increases the risk of liver, breast, and other cancers.

Obesity: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of several types of cancer, including colon, breast, and kidney cancer.
  • AND WHAT YOU CAN DO
  • Since we are bombarded with how bad things can be, here is a list of the things you can do to prevent cancer. Yes, some people do these things and still get cancer. We do our best to be our best.
    1. Healthy Diet:
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week: This can help you maintain a healthy weight, lower your risk of certain cancers, and improve your overall health.Focus on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
    2. Regular Physical Activity
  • 3. Avoid Tobacco Products
    4. Limit Alcohol Consumption
    5. Sun Protection
6.Get screened for cancers regularly: Early detection is crucial for successful treatment.
    7. Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of several cancers
    8. Smoking and using tobacco products are major risk factors for many types of cancer:    Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your cancer risk. These foods are rich in nutrients and antioxidants that can help protect against cancer.
    9. Other Lifestyle Factors:
Get enough sleep: Poor sleep can increase the risk of weight gain, which is a cancer risk factor. Manage stress: Chronic stress can weaken your immune system and potentially increase your risk of cancer. Be aware of environmental exposures: Some environmental toxins can increase your risk of cancer.
  • Limit red and processed meats:
These have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, especially colon cancer. Control portion sizes:
Overeating can contribute to weight gain, which is a risk factor for several cancers.
Stay hydrated:Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help your body function properly.
Find activities you enjoy: This will make it easier to stick to a regular exercise routine.

Take a look at both lists. The first is duanting. The second is do-able. VERY do-able. We often feel overwhelmed by the prospects of cancers. Yes, you have been touched by cancer either personally, or friends, family, co-workers, acquaintances. But please understand this, that although the medical world wants to tell you often that cancer is everywhere, the majority of people don't get cancer. Again, the majoirty of people don't get cancers.

So let's take our time and focus on creating such a naturally powerful body that cancer has no chance. Stack the deck in your favor.

And longevity will be a natural experience for you.

Have a GREAT MEMORIAL DAY weekend.

Sincerely,

-Dr. J.
